City to Update Voter Lists as Required by State: Letters to be Mailed to Registered Voters Who Have Not Participated in Recent Elections

In the next few weeks, registered voters who have not voted in two consecutive general elections will receive notice from the Burlington City Clerk’s Office requesting that they confirm their residency in Burlington to ensure their eligibility to vote.  We encourage any individual who receives a letter to please promptly reply to the letter to help us update the Voter Checklist.  Voters who have voted recently will not receive these letters.

Under Vermont State Law, letters are sent to registered voters who have not voted in two general elections requesting that they confirm or update their residency.  A postage paid postcard will be included with each letter, which the recipient should complete and return.  The postcards allow the individuals to confirm their residency, update their address, or remove their name from the Voter Checklist.  Voters who do not return a postcard will remain on the challenged voter list for two more general elections, after which they may be purged from the Voter Checklist.  Inactive voters can be challenged by September 15 of odd numbered years.

Not all registered voters will receive this letter.  If you would like information about how to register to vote or want to confirm your voter registration status please visit https://www.burlingtonvt.gov/Public-Boards/Board-for-Registration-of-Voters.
