Mayor Miro Weinberger Statement in Response to Air Force Decision to Base F-35s at Vermont Air National Guard

“Today’s decision by the Air Force to base the F-35 in Vermont recognizes the dedication, hard work, and skill of the men and women of the Vermont Air National Guard.  This decision not only ensures the future of the Guard and its ability to fulfill its dual mission, but also protects many Burlington and surrounding area jobs, the significant financial impact the Guard has on our local economy, and the excellent fire safety services the Guard provides Burlington International Airport.  As we move forward to prepare for the arrival of the new planes, we must remember that the months-long community conversation has been contentious and that not everyone in our communities will welcome today’s announcement.  We have considerable work ahead to improve the quality of life in the neighborhoods surrounding the airport.  I commit that the City of Burlington and the airport will continue that work.”
