The office of the City Fire Marshal is responsible for ensuring adequate Fire Department access during the planning phase of any new construction. Our office reviews construction projects for compliance with the State and local Fire and Life Safety Codes. Construction projects requiring Fire Alarm or Fire Suppression systems require a permit be issued through this office. After the plans have been approved, this office conducts an acceptance test. Plans review and acceptance testing is required by the City prior to the issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy for the building.
The office of the City Fire Marshal delivers fire and life safety programs to schools and business, and assists in the development of emergency plans for private and public buildings. The office has a juvenile fire setter intervention and education program for families.
Fire Investigation
The office of the City Fire Marshal investigates the origin and cause of fires. Cases that are determined to be suspicious are referred to the Vermont State Police Fire Investigation Unit.
** If you are having work done to your home or business, please call Fire Dispatch at 802-864-5311 to report construction at that location. If any alarms go off, you are responsible for the false alarm. **
